 **LONDON (AP)** — Maggie Smith, the legendary and scene-stealing actress who won an Oscar for her role in the 1969 film "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" and captured new audiences as the dowager Countess of Grantham in "Downton Abbey" and Professor McGonagall in the "Harry Potter" series, passed away on Friday at the age of 89. Her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, announced her death, stating she passed away early in a London hospital, leaving behind two sons and five grandchildren who are heartbroken over the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.



Smith was celebrated as one of the preeminent British actresses of her generation, boasting two Oscars, numerous nominations, and a wealth of accolades.
